Charlotte is growing so fast and has such a diverse profile of areas you can choose from that I suggest you order the Newcomer's guide that the Chamber of Commerce sells and narrow your serach to a specific area rather than an architectural style. You most likely will find a ranch in those areas very easily. The other suggestion would be to narrow your search to either new construction or resale properties. Both have a lot of advantages but that will help you in narrowing down your search.
My wife and I just purchased a home in idlewild farms. My wife is working in Ballentyne and I work in North charlotte so the location was a split. I have looked at several homes in this subdivision and feel that its a great place to invest in. The majority of homes were built in the early 70's by Ervin builders and the quality passes that of most cookie cutter subdivisions built today. I think before people shell out 200k for a tiny place in sheffeild park or eastway they should take a look at Idlewild farms. Its only a easy 15 min. drive to downtown up independence. As far as safety I currently live of the plaza near 36th st. and have never had any problems. Neiborhoods that are good investments are not going to be labled wonderfull. I guess it depends if you are looking for a investment or a place to live the rest of your life.
Instead of getting hounded by all these realtors check Carolinahome.com its a wonderfull website and helped me find my house and really get to see whats availibe and not what a realtor whants to show you.

Uh, "all these realtors"? I see only one response on this whole thread by ONE realtor
