This isnt great news for new year, but considering world economy is in the pits, slow growth is better than no growth. When the economy tanked I was thinking we was going to be ok by 2012 but now I am thinking by 2015
Quote:
Charlotte-area economists predict another year of slow growth, uncertainty and stagnant hiring in 2012. They do see some bright spots but don't expect a major economic improvement.
I think that you (and the article) are about spot-on, Sunny. As one who lives in the UK but visits Charlotte a couple of times a year, it seems to me that the Charlotte economy is improving. Now, improving could mean not sliding backwards as fast as other area but, that is just being negative.
Compared with what I see in the UK which is not doing very well at all but seems to be doing better than most of the rest of Europe, Charlotte is doing alright.
Personally I'd rather have a slow but steady recovery than the boom and bust cycles that we have seen in previous years.
Europe and the Euro is now in serious trouble. The idiots running Europe completely failed to monitor their own member states economies and now they owe (almost) more money than there is. Of course, the Council of Europe is non-elected so they will not be held accountable for the mess they have caused. If the Euro collapses as seem likely then the whole world will most likely fall into recession. I found this rather depressing article on Reuters Insight: West in political crisis has echoes of 1930s
I sincerely hope that in the upcoming presidential elections, the US chooses someone who has had at least some international experience. I believe that an isolationist policy will not best serve the US in the coming decade.
I just cannot wait until Mrs. krokus and I get our US residency approved and we can move to Charlotte and enjoy our retirement with our son and his family.
Meanwhile I hope that the very slow improvement in the Charlotte economy continues. However I believe that it will be the case.
How can you have anything other than no or slow growth when unemployment is so high w/a lack of jobs (so to speak) and housing in the tank?
Did everyone see that article in the observer about shadow inventory that MikeyKid has been touting here since like '08?
I'm neither a cheerleader or a doomsdayer, I'm a realist....the economy won't be "healthy" for a long time.....anyone who thinks otherwise is kidding themselves...
Jack, I am with you. Neither cheerleader nor doomsayer. I agree with you about the economy. Right now it ain't so good in Charlotte. But my obervation is based upon seeing other economies than Charlotte. Most of these are worse than Charlotte's.
I also think that the old days of the 1980s when the economy was flying (and we all loved bankers) are gone for good.
The coming years will, I think, see growth but I believe that this will be slow and sure rather than a shooting star. Personally I do not expect a huge recovery either this year or for several years in the future.

I saw it. And I have agreed w/ Mikey from day one. I am on record stating that this economy wasn't gonna improve in Charlotte til no sooner than 2015 - said that back in 09, and got slammed for it. Said it again in 2010 and got slammed again. I guess folks don't wanna hear an analysis if it isn't happy news, lol.
At this point, unless job hunters find jobs elsewhere, reducing the pressure for hiring, and unless folks without jobs keep moving here - I honestly think 2015 is too optimistic.
Like so much of what we see happening in the world it becomes a matter of perspective. I am happy that this article predicts slow growth for Charlotte, which in the big picture is a major positive when breaking even these days should be considered good. I agree with krokus on the EU, what a huge mess dragging the global economy down. Europe is in big trouble.
I'm glad the shadow inventory is finally getting some MSM press as we know it's a HUGE problem. Then again, we're talking the CO here - no fan of their "work". I was talking to my b-in-law who works for a management company in Queens when I was back on LI for the holidays. He talked of so many issues with non-payment and properties in many varying states of foreclosure. So in the big picture I don't think Charlotte stands alone with this issue... that said, Jack's point is completely valid - something needs to happen with jobs->housing to get us completely out of it. Who knows if it's even possible at this point. We've written too many checks and don't have enough income coming in. If these central banks were people, they'd be thrown out on the street and mocked for the inability to manage their money.

You're right Ani. Did not mean to forget you. This area experienced such growth. Much more than I will ever know for the short time I've been here.
The statistics say this area is still "growing" but much slower than it used too.
The question is how long will it take to find that "sweet spot" of somewhat balance again (ie healthy steady growth). Will this area ever find it again?

In my opinion, part of Charlotte's problem, since 2009, has been the mess in Gaston & Cleveland Counties. You could even throw Rutherford in there, because the business failures when the banks stopped making operating loans has been driving people toward Charlotte. In Rutherford County & SW Cleveland County they are also looking at Spartanburg.
Cleveland County is continuing to work on jobs. As more jobs come to Cleveland County, pressure lessens on Charlotte. Most of Cleveland County is not commuteable to Charlotte, but Kings Mountain certainly is.
The Disney data center had a pull-out clause which has now passed. We may yet see Mickey shaking hands with Bev.
There's a good possibility of a third data center announcement. Holder Construction out of Charlotte has been working out here for about a year & a half. Over 2 million dollars has been put into downtown Kings Mountain.
I'm familiar w/what's going on at the Copeland building....solid company moving into that building. They are retrofitting the inside to accomodate this company.
Facebook continues to move along also (w of Charlotte)...
Jobs anywhere in the Charlotte region is a good thing IMO..
