i am moving from boston will work in North Tryon on contract need safe gated apartment recommendations. I know there is lot of discussion of charlotte safety which is very scary but i hope to find at least one apartment which is gated or secure buildings relatively close to north tryon i am ready to drive more for peace of mind. I stayed in charlotte 10 yrs back and safe was not that big concern then. Please advice on specific apartments in university area(thornberry?) or ballantyne(plantation park ?)

There really aren't a lot of gated apt complexes in Charlotte, mostly because they don't really keep criminals out and are an annoyance to most residents.

Living too close to N. Tryon is not a good idea - there's a lot of the 'hood up that way. Unfortunately, Ballantyne is not going to be very convenient to that location either, and that would be your best bet for nice places. But just how far up N. Tryon are you talking for job location?

What is your budget?

I just relocated here to Concord. I can recommend Bexley Square at Concord Mills. Me and my gf just moved here and so far love it. It's a gated community but overall a good area from what I can tell. Busy though with the mall and everything within a reasonable distance. A lot within a reasonable walking distance as well.

That's a good budget, you'll have some choices for sure. How far out of uptown on N. Tryon is your job?

Don't go toward Concord. Given your job location and situation, go to Huntersville.

I would recommend Birkdale Village Apt. They are very near the nice newish Presbyterian Hospital

hospital huntersville nc - Google Search

Ballantyne will really give you a bad commute. I second Huntersville. Personally I would be less concerned about safety and would look in the South End. You would be near city amenities and you could walk, bike or take the light rail to work. I don't consider Charlotte unsafe except for certain specific areas.
