Union County commisioners are considering a whopping 1/2 cent tax cut which would save a person with a $400k house $20/yr.
Cutting services to fund tax break? | Union County Weekly
The county got a windfall of $54 million dollars in January from the lease of the hospital. One of the commisioners is pushing to have the $54M used as a stimilus and divy it up to the citizens in the county.....yeah, I'm sure that won't happen. I wonder if the token 1/2 cent cut is done just to say 'we cut your taxes'

Would you rather it be a 1/2 cent increase.

Exactly. Instead of making hard decisions they are looking for political points.....

What do you expect. The same crap happens year after year...

Down the road, when payments must be made on all of those bonds the county issued to build schools, we'll be lucky if the increase is less than 20 cents per assessed $100.

The Commissioners ....

"Oh, we have to pay it back?"

Yep, a major firestorm is coming locally just like the rest of america...

Here's the problem. Just like what's going on nationally, no one wants to deal w/the problems in Union County. Politicians are just looking for ways to get re-elected instead of making tough decisions.

Also, the public bears some blame for this. We all talk a good game about how we want "less government", but when you look at say reducing the spending on socialized health care "aka Medicare", seniors won't vote for someone who touches it...just like social security...same thing. Not putting all the blame on seniors, but its just an example of why things cant get done.

So, in a nutshell, what you are going to have is just tinkering and tinkering until you get to a point where it becomes impossible to manage at all.....

just my .02

CJ - I agree 100%! Every politician is passing the buck and pushing the amount due, further on down the road, hoping they won't be in office when the stuff "hits the fan!" Medicare is becoming a disaster and Medicaid is already there. Changes will have to be made to Social Security so that high-income seniors will receive reduced or no benefits depending on their income. I have a few friends with nearly $100,000 pensions who regard their newly-received benefits as "play money". SS is going to have to be treated like car insurance. Do they give you back your premium if you don't have an accident? No! They have to treat SS as insurance ... it's there, only if you need it!

I have mixed feelings on the state of education. It seems everyone wants smaller classes almost to the point of a ratio of one teacher to 10 kids. I hear teachers complaining about class sizes of 24 or above. I'd love to hear what they would say in dealing with my old grammar school class that had 38 in it. No one thought a class of that size was unusual ... that was the norm back then. It seems everyone got spoiled over the decades.

As much as I may complain though, it's still a lot cheaper here in Union County than in Passaic County, NJ. I moved here in 2005, when the taxes on my old house were about $5200. They are now nearly $8500. I feel sorry for the young couple that bought my house! Imagine if Union and Mecklenburg politicians tried that much of an increase on county inhabitants. They'd be "swinging" from the trees!

Sounds like socialism or Robin Hood approach to me. I hate to think how many thousands of dollars I paid into SS, I'm sure over $100k...and I'm I'm happy to donate it so others in 'NEED can have it?? give me a break...class warfare at it's best...
