Someone mentioned Touchstone around the McAlpine/Four Mile Creek Greenway. I think this area would be very good. There are less expensive areas around the this greenway and Trader Joe's and Starbucks is at one end of it. You can also access Earthfare and numerous restaurants off of Johnson Road. It is also very close to Ballantyne - like 10 minutes or less. You can link to a map of the greenway on this page: http://charmeck.org/mecklenburg/coun...greenways.aspx

Belmont does seem interesting. However, my husband has since clarified to me that he'd prefer to live closer to work. We are now focusing on the area south of 277. He is looking at Starmount, but it seems to have much less of the walkable Main Street feel that I am looking for. I'm not really interested in walking to a gas station or car dealership with my toddler!
That story is crazy! I will have to get used to people like that woman!
You will rarely run into a person like that woman. However, Lincolnton has the reputation & lives up to it.

Touchstone is very nice, established older area with two small shopping centers on either end of the neighborhood (one has the Trader Joes, Starbucks, CVS, etc. and the other has a pizza joint, a Tuesday Morning, etc. There's also a good elementary school in the neighborhood (McAlpine). I have seen rental homes in the area for +- 1300 as well.
I don't know if you are going to find a "Main Street feel" anywhere in Charlotte. I see a little bit of it in NoDa and Plaza-Midwood, but you have already ruled those areas out by searching south of 277. Pineville kind of has that feel, but I would lean more to the opinion that it's "Main Street" is sitting there watching the world leave it behind. There is the Police department and a shop or few there, but nothing to make me want to drive out there and get out to walk around. Matthews has the feel, but the majority of the houses are beyons what I woukd consider a walkable range, unlesz you're out walking for exercise.
