I wish it was surrounded by the stuff Rittenhouse is surrounded by.

It doesn't matter. Rittenhouse has been a gathering point for young & old for generations. I think that this park will be the same. A park doesn't have to be big to have appeal.

Agreed. And it will be a MUCH better feature than the vacant buildings and parking lot(s) it is replacing!

Absolutely.

Rittenhouse is the "urban" gathering point, while Belmont Plateau is the recreational gathering point. I wonder where Charlotte will establish the Belmont Plateau of the area. But that's for another thread in the future.

The surroundings of a park matter very much actually. Why do you think Marshall Park is such a flop? Of course Bearden Park will be better in that regard, but Rittenhouse is an obvious step or two above that.

You don't think the park is a plus? Here's how you can fix that - compare the area (once the park and BB&T stadium are completed and open) to what was there previously. Check out this link and then tell me if the park is an improvement...

Besides acting as an awesome destination for lunch, walking etc for the Uptown work crowd, you will start to see bigger crowds gravitating toward the park as a meeting place for baseball & football games. It's a win, and doesn't need to be "bigger than" or "better than" - it just needs to be, and now it is.

A lot of very rich people live on Rittenhouse Square. That isn't necessary for a park to be successful. All of the squares are successful in their own way, but Rittenhouse is just nicer, hence the most successful. That's what I meant. If you didn't know the demographics, that's fine. I didn't want to elaborate, since this is the Charlotte board, after all.

I'm very perplexed as to how you took ANY of this away from my post. I never even remotely implied that this park wasn't good for Charlotte or that it doesn't fill an obvious void in Uptown's urban scene--quite the opposite actually. I only said that Rittenhouse's surroundings are more desirable. Anyone who's been to Center City Philadelphia wouldn't really disagree.

I wasn't talking about a specific demographic, but rather being surrounded by established commercial and residential uses, that's all.
