I would say yes it would get much larger. The merger would create the largest airline in the world. With American having a large Latin American route structure from Miami, I am sure they will route new Latin American routes to Charlotte to complement Miami hub. Since American partners with Japan Airlines, I would not be surprise if Charlotte get a nonstop Tokyo flight. However I think a much more aggressive expansion plan to the tunes of billions is need asap.
The merger wil have hubs in Charlotte, Phoenix, Dallas, Chicago, Miami, New York JFK, Philadephia, Los Angeles, Washington DC
according to doug parker(usair ceo), under a merger, usair would "probably grow from 600+ flights to over 800+ flights a day. I don't think he specifically mentioned Charlotte adding more international flights, but he mentioned that dallas and chicago would probably lose domestic flights to charlotte since there is overlap. American does not have a true east coast hub, & since charlotte is usair's most profitable airport, it would make perfect sense to grow charlotte-douglas.

Does the airport have the current infrastructure or ability to potentially handle a 30% growth in flight capacity?

Right now the airport is in the midst of a $1 billon expansion. This expansion includes a 5th runway, an expanded main terminal, & a free standing international terminal. This was started prior to USAir stating their intentions for a merger.
CLT airport would definitely grow, from about 600 to about 800 from what I read. CLT has a lot of land to expand on and the willingness of airport and city leaders to do that, that no other city in the southeast offers. The Airport would give the new airline the chance to compete against Delta's Atlanta hub in in the southeast.
I could see the possibility of CLT getting some of Philadelphia's International Flights (mainly European flights), because they already have a major Int hub at JFK only 1.5 hrs away.
I would not hold your breath. This gives them 5 hubs on the east coast, Miami, DC, JFK & Charlotte & Philly and then there is Chicago. They don't need this many hubs. IMO, one or two of them will disappear.
The deal only makes sense if they can shut things down to realize cost savings.

I agree, I doubt that Charlotte will disappear. MIA is focused on international flights, not a big domestic hub.
DC is not a hub for AA, it is a hub for United. Reagan airport is merely a reliever airport.
Philly could disappear or get a significant cutback. because it lacks land to expand on and NYC is too close by.
Chicago is in the Midwest.
Anything can happen, but right now Delta and Atlanta have a monopoly on the southeast, and the CLT hub gives the new airline the best opportunity to change that.
