Contract awarded in Interstate 485 widening project - News 14

In whatever new projects the State undertakes, I hope they begin appropriating land to allow for future road expansion. It'd be great to see the third lane added on the exterior of the existing road, allowing for easy (interior) lane additions in the future if need be.

Done by "late" 2014. Can't wait to see how fun it's going to be to drive during construction.

Wasn't there talks of adding two lanes, with one being a toll lane? I feel like that will better future-proof that section, especially how the newest section of I-485 will be four lanes in each direction. In any case, I hope once they're done with this section, they'll be able to start on the next section between Rea Road and Independence Blvd, and then from Indy to Albemarle road.

It would be great if 485 would be completed. I don't understand why more resources aren't directed to that before other projects are begun.

Construction for the final part of I-485 is already happening. It's already funded.

There should be 5 lanes each way on 485. Anyone who has actually been on a proper beltway knows what I mean.

Finished by 2014 - does not count delays due to weather, change orders, etc. Finished by 2014 - the check's in the mail. Once finished, it will still be daily stop and roll especially on the southern (Matthews - I-77) loop

I agree, if we expand it, might as well do it the right way (less expensive). And what better time than right now since unemployment rate is so high in Charlotte area...

Since funding is not there, I would not mind to get private companies footing the bill and have one/two tool lanes to pay them back.

I know everyone gets sick of my comparing Charlotte to Kansas City and its burbs, but to me it is quite valid. If you watch this vid, you can see why I compare the two areas. Squint your eyes and you will think you are right here in Charlotte. I 435 was built to function exactly as 485 functions.

This was one of the main roads I used nearly daily. So disgusting to move back to my "home state" and find that Kansas has a much more robust highway system around the metro than Charlotte. And they have had it for years. Note where the driver crosses over into Kansas from Missouri.

My point is . . . we can do better and I don't get why we haven't.
