Hi to all,

We will be moving to CLT in August, coming from Pittsburgh. One of the great joys was FINALLY getting SWA in our airport. Now I see that they do not fly out of CLT. Bummer....

Has anyone heard if SW is likely to begin service into and out of CLT in the forseeable future? If not, what other discount airlines are regulars out of CLT? I am having trouble finding out some of the discounters online.

USAirways had jacked their pricing up (as have most airlines today) and cut back on the service into and out of CLT from PGH.

Raleigh is the best you are going to get. If they DID go to CLT they would probably have a layover in Raliegh.... LOL!!!

I once flew from Cleveland to DC on Southwest, and there were people on that plane going to BOSTON!!!!! Makes me wonder if they have ever seen a map of the USA....

Living in Pittsburgh for the last 30+ years, I know what a USAir town is like. I have been here since USAir was Allegheny Airlines, then USAIR, and now USAirways. We were held captive with high pricing. When Pit built the new airport, it was with the hopes that USAir would remain a hub, and many of the goals of this fine airport were centered around USAirways. Now they have "abandoned" PIT, making CLT and Phoenix and Philly the hubs.

SW entered the PIT market while US was still holding us in its grips. SW has been great for competition.

Perhaps folks in CLT have also been hoping for SW to come in to this city. Are the city planners and powers-that-be working on something in the background? That is what they did in Pit, so it surprised many of us in the public when the announcement was made. Also, what discounts are available?

Thanks for your comments and thoughts.
Sandy

I totally agree that a little competition is a great thing for all - but USAir is protected like the little kid sister by big brother government here - NO COMPETITION ALLOWED.

So it seems that they are holding CLT in their grips just like they did in PIT forever.

Sad.

How long a drive to Raleigh's airport?

I'm coming down from just outside Pittsburgh myself (Kittanning). I'm moving in September and hubby is staying here until the house sells or he gets a job down there, whichever comes first.

I totally know where you are coming from!! I flew on business for 10 years from 1987 through 1997 and therefore went through the terminal changeover. I was so thrilled with the new terminal.......many more women's bathrooms, no smoking, lot more food to choose from and stores to shop while you wait, and really light and airy. Unfortunately, Useless Airways......er, sorry, USAirways, screwed the city big time. Like you, I was so happy to see SW and so sad to not see them down in CLT.

But then, since we KNOW just how loyal and faithful Useless can be , we can still hold out hope that things might change in CLT.

Our daughter is coming down over Labor Day weekend and she found a fairly cheap flight out of Syracuse with Northwest. Unfortunately, she has to go through Detroit to do it, but it beat the heck out of the $500 that US wanted for the same time frame! She said that she would gladly stop in Detroit to save $300!!

It's around 170 miles.
Have you tried Jet Blue? I know the flight is via JFK but might be better than driving 3 hours at the other end.
Prices seem reasonable.

I really think the addition of the third parallel runway might possibly open the door for more airlines...specifically SWA. For those that don't know, SWA had CLT versus FTL (Fort Lauderdale) a few years back for an expansion route. They picked FTL and haven't mentioned CLT since.

It's not that USAir has some under the table deal with CLT that keeps others out (AirTran got in didn't they), it's that CLT can't handle the volume that SWA likes to deal in. Watch the skies around the airport at any time...the air traffic is stacked for miles...double barreled...in and out. The third parallel is going to give some breathing room...and hopefully, SWA is allowed to take some of that air.

Default Oh, that is good news

Expanding the airport makes sense. I didn't realize that SWA might be monitoring the new expansion. Makes sense that there is not the opportunity to grow currently.

This kind of information, although it might only be rumors, is helpful.
