My family and I are looking to purchase a house that is located at the end of a narrow cove on Lake Norman. While the water in this cove is quite deep, we are concerned that our property will be overrun by mosquitoes. Has anyone had experience with this? Thanks!

Yep! I've had experience with this.

I'm fair skinned with blonde hair and for some reason, the mosquitos love to dine on me any time of year. Really, the winters are so mild here that not a lot gets killed off. Even if you're ~not~ on the lake, the mosquitoes will be rampant. They always have on the news, ways to keep the mosquito population down (don't keep standing water, etc.) and they don't seem to spray for mosquitoes like they did when I was a kid in Baltimore.

I've heard, but haven't used, that there are companies that can come out and treat your yard in the event you'd like to have an outdoor gathering at your place. It's a temporary thing though, and would have to be reapplied if you want to continue to stay mosquito-free.

Mosquitos are generally bad in SC & NC, but are the mosquitoes worse near the small coves?

My experience is no, they are not. The coves are not "still" enough to breed mosquitos like standing still water would be. There are waves from wind and boat traffic, etc.

But, that's just my experience.

Mosquitoes aren't as bad in moving or deepwater as they are in shallow depressions with no predators
