How do you feel we can make Charlotte a safer place to live?

My suggestions are to get a small indoor/outdoor security system. Remove all valuables from view inside your car. Lock up lawnmowers, yard tools, bikes, etc. in your garage or shed after use. Join your neighborhood watch. Get to know your neighbors and police department. Install a deadbolt in your home. Lock all windows and doors. Buy a gun for protection.

Most crimes are committed by someone you know or those who reside outside your neighborhood. If you are traveling at night around Charlotte. Travel in pairs and know your surroundings.

If you enter an area that is unfamiliar and unsafe. Immediately leave the area. Some neighborhoods or should I say hood's have multiple gang members.

Report activity that seems out of the ordinary in your neighborhood. Someone loitering in the area for more than three days. Cars sitting by the road for over a week unattended. Young people who gather late at night playing loud music, drinking and being michievous. Report this issue to the parents first. If no action is taken. Call the police.

Install a car alarm. Make sure your home or apartment complex is well lit. Alert your neighbors to a sudden rash of car or home breakins, vandalism, or out of control teenagers loitering in the area.

Make sure you know where your children are and who their friends are. Another key to reducing crime is to stop telling everyone about your home theater system, new big screen television or your coin collection.

The world is changing and so is the criminal. Becoming aware is key. Yet you do not have to live in fear.
Have a safe year everyone!

We need the law enforcers to enforce the laws the law breakers are breaking for a start. Then teach the law breakers that breaking the law will have the law breaker enforsers enforcing the laws on them so they wont do it anymore..

Do away with dangerous breed dog restrictions, then the home is safe when no one is home.

I agree. Its very hard to beat a good watch/guard dog.
I wonder which dogs they consider dangerous...A Japanese akita for example has been bred for hundreds of years to kill large bears and guard the family but also be very gentle around children. Surely they would never try to "outlaw" this breed.

You can not legislate morality, responsibilty, respect or spirituality. The criminals and thugs do not hold to any of these qualities, so it is not about making Charlotte (or any community) safer but taking care of ourselves and our family.

Chromekitty, you made some good points. Thugs, do not hold to any of those qualities you wrote about. And we are responsible for ourselves and our families. But is not the people in your community your family. The doctor you have visited for over ten years. Your neighbor whom has become part of the family. The young child who has grown from a youth to a man. Who may call or visit from time to time.
Family encompasses not just your immediate or extended family, but those you have come to know throughout the years. The community are the people who live within a designated space. i.e. Southpark, Northeast, West Charlotte, Ballantyne, Mountain Island. . . . .

Have a good day!

I don't agree with the "it takes a village mentality".

We are a society of whom MANY can not govern their own lives, they need not worry about others.

Based on my post above, Charlotte would be safer if this type of trash was in jail, not given an ankle bracelet that can easily be cut off.
