Ok, I've been here for a year now . With the exception of the heat and the traffic, it has been a great experience. One thing. If you are moving here to find a lower cost of living, DON'T. Move here becuse you like the area, or the people. But moving here to make your dollar go further is a pipe dream. Also, tack on the fact that jobs pay a MINIMUM of 20 percent less here (if you can find one) and your dollar will not go a long way. Taxes, groceries, utility bills, water bills are all high, high , high. If one more of my collegues says I must be living like a king with thos cheap North Carolina prices I am going to lose it. That said, it is a great place to live and I'm very glad I moved here but from a dollar standpoint? uh-uh

no native has ever brag about it cheap to live in this state or promotes that it is.

It really relative to where you are moving from the state of cost of property taxes and cost and size of your home you moved from.

Moving base on just living cost is like being a refugee from the state you came from

Oh..its not the natives at all. It is the perception from the more expensive cities that moving here is cheaper.

Depends on the field that you are in, my wife and I are from NY and many things cost about the same, food is actually more expensive, but the big area of savings is housing we are renting a 3 br house w 2 car gar, for less than we were renting a 2br apt in ny. Our salaries are actually comparable.

Seriously, My mortgage for a 2800sq/ft 4bed, 2.5 bath house with a ton of upgrades etc. is $180 more a month than what I was paying for a 1 bedroom apartment that was smaller than my master suite. My car insurance is half of what it was in NY, taxes are cheaper and so is gas. If I were to own this same house in NY my taxes would be $10,000+ a year and my utilities for this house is far less than what I paid for my 1 bedroom apt. I could probably come up with a bunch more but that alone is enough for me. Not sure where in NY you are from, maybe upstate so that would change things but coming from the Tri-State area, the cost of living is much cheaper.
Man, the last couple days here it seems like a lot of NYers are crying about life in NC. Geeze, it's no wonder shy the natives can't stand us.

So what do you do so others can tie the wage decrease to a specific career.

We know that teachers don't make as much. Nurses don't make as much. Some professions are comparable like some occupational, physical therapists, etc. Some IT is comparable and you get it whatever money you want if you're the cream that floats to the top.

First off, I am NOT crying. Did you even read the tone of my note???
I said I like it here alot and would never move back. The positives outweigh the negatives by a long way. Since you ranted on about people crying about NC from NY, I should state the intent of my note was not to talk about all the positives (which are MANY).

My note was purely to state that if you are moving here without a comparable salaried job, when its all said and done, it is not cheaper. As for taxes, no kidding your taxes are less! Your house is worth a third as much as the tri-state area. You may not pay as much but the mill rates are in the same ballpark. Did anyone mention state income taxes? One of the highest in the country. How about the outrageous water bills people pay? Ok, car insurance is cheaper, did you mention the personal property tax here???

These forums are meant to INFORM people. All I wanted to do was make the point that if you are coming here to seek a better life, you are probably making a good choice. Just do your homework and don't expect things to be that much cheaper sans your mortgage. This forum reminds me of the forums in NY. God FORBID you knock NY up there, seems the same here. Too bad, because I am sure alot of people who want to move here would respect honest opinions, not blind praise for a place that deserves it in many ways and doesn't in others.

I understood what you were saying. Didn't think it was negative at all.
