I wonder if there is any data on whether or not background checks prior to gun purchases have any bearing on safety. Or is it just something we do to feel better? Didn't a couple of recent mass killers get their weapons legally?

While I do not have any data to show, it's of my opinion that the anti-gun politicians use scare tactics to get people behind their agendas. The "let's make people FEEL safer" routine. When in reality, stricter gun laws ONLY prevent good people from obtaining guns.
The criminal element, people with bad intentions, USUALLY do not walk into a gun store to purchase weapons. Why? Because they have criminal records. Rocket Scientry at it's best here
. Criminals laugh at background checks, because they go to their local thugs to get weapons, not to a store
.
I was a cop for 26 years. I locked up countless people for illegal possession and use of firearms. Do you know how many of those guns were purchased legally by these people........NONE!!
I remember one older gentlemen in Brownsville, Brooklyn, telling me he applied for a pistol permit and had been denied seven times. Yet, he lived in one of the highest crime areas of Brooklyn and was even shot twice, while being robbed several years earlier. More proof that strict gun laws ONLY affect the good people trying to protect themselves.
