Winter in Charlotte it's also typical to have 30-40 degree temp swing from the morning low to the afternoon high..but my son still wears shorts every day to school
There can be some pretty cold mornings but usually once the sun comes up the average is in the 50's or so during the day during the winter months (Dec,Jan,Feb). The normal for now is a high in the low 60's and low of around 40.
Also, moving beyond just the temperature the winters here are shorter and not even as close to being as brutal as MA. I remember the wind chill along with the snow and slush there....yuck! If it snows it will normally melt once the sun is up so it doesn't last. And its not gray and depressing for months. Love these Carolina blue skies! So yes, a cold front can certainly move through but the winter here is far superior to MA in my opinion. Since moving here I have retired my heavy winter coat and no longer own a shovel.
The temperatures in winter can really vary too...it can be in the 40's, 50's, 60's or 70's on any given day! If you google the weather history (wunderground.com) for Charlotte or Davidson, you'll see what I mean!
I think my blood has thinned after 7 years here though....once upon a time I'd have thought 45 degrees was nice!

I meant to mention that main reason for overnight low temps is the lack of cloud cover that can insulate the warmer day temps. Whereas it is normal to have cloudy, grey (gloomy) skies up north like OH it is quite the contrast down here where most days are sunny.
One thing I've noticed here is that the swings in daily temperatures are much larger down here. It can be a low of 32, and a high of 68 on the same day. Up North, the ranges are much smaller. A low of 32 means a high of around 45 the same day.
It's a cold 32 degrees where I live today - in MA - and 23 in Davidson - yikes!!!
Is this usual Fall/Winter weather, or has a cold front moved through?
One of our main reasons at looking to move is warmer weather....
It get cold at night. Its almost always clear here in the winter at night, but the days can get really warm. We still have winter here. Its not Florida, but even today the temp has rebounded nicely. I bet we get close to 60. The forecast when this cold front came through was 51 today. I moved here from the north, and the difference here is I can golf year round. That you can't do in MA. That's how I judge my winters now.
