Hello,
My daughter is moving to Charlotte NC she wants to attend Central Piedmont Community College, her semester starts Aug. 15, 2014 but she won't be 18 until 8/22/14 will she be able to rent an apartment with no credit? no job? just her pell grant? she plans on paying her out of state tuition. after she wants to transfer to University of North Carolina.
If she starts as an out of state student after a year will she be able to qualify as an in state student tuituion. She will be depending on herself I will be helping her as much as she lets me. Can someone please let me know what the process is. We already know she needs a NC ID she doesn't drive yet, she has been accepted to CPCC and has been accepted to receive her Pell Grant.
Which campus will she be on? Landlords usually pull credit, ask for first and security and typically look for income that's three times the rent. Are you able to cosign for her? I know apartment complexes will accept a cosigner. Private landlords will have their own criteria.
Other option is to look into renting a room in a private house near the campus she will be at.
No, she will not be able to rent an apartment on her own with no job and no credit. You will probably have to co-sign for her if she rents an apartment. Maybe have her look around to rent a private place perhaps with a student from UNCC or CPCC.
Long story short: the younger and more financially dependent the student, the greater the burden of proof that she has to bear.
She can't just live in NC; she has to prove that it is her legal domicile. That burden is spelled out in the PDF. Note also that parents' residence(s) are also considered prima facie evidence for or against her domicile status.
She will need you to cosign which shouldnt be a problem... but in order to get in state she will need a year on her own. Not sure you can do that in NC without taking a year off from school.
I moved to VA and worked for a year to get in-state tuition.
Or find a school where she could get in-state tuition and/or campus housing.
