Do you think homeless people are unsafe? There are probably a few at the tables upstairs usually looking at reading material. But certainly the main library is a safe place to bring children. I've always brought mine there. However there is no children's section there and they would probably be bored- you have to go to the Imaginon Children's library 2 blocks away. Highly recommend Imaginon for kids!
Were you looking for "homeless people"? There are many organizations in the area that can direct volunteers or other aid towards their needs. The library might have some information about opportunities.
I know what the OP is getting at. I have been to some libraries that were too lenient with homeless people and unwilling to prod them after overstaying their welcome. They would be sleeping in the chairs, spend hours watching movies at the multimedia stations, smoke (even urinate) in between the bookshelves.
It is safe - but frustrating that they've separated the kids' library completely out of the main library. Imaginon IS a cool place to go, with tons of kids' books, activities and resources. But if you also want a book, you'll have to go to both places - Imaginon and the main library. We stopped going to the downtown library for that reason.

That would be frustrating as usually my kids and I "split" up when we enter the library. I go to my section and they each go to theirs.
Whenever we go to a play though, we hang out afterwards at Imaginon book section. I just bring my kindle.
Were the first few responders to this thread confused by the OP's question on "homeless people"?
I work right next to the main library and I can attest to the fact that there are ALWAYS a number of (0<n<10) homeless folks idling around the entrance of the library. I do not know if they're a nuisance or not, though.
