The above posters are correct. No, not every part of Gastonia is dicey -- we have a house here and have never felt unsafe. But as Chromekitty wrote, every city-town has its less savory parts, but that doesn't mean one should write off an entire city-town because of it.
Fort Mill is nice and so is Belmont. However, if the job is in Gastonia, I'd start looking there and then cast out a wider net if you don't find something you like. Logic says to keep a commute as short as possible to save time and money, but "warm fuzzies" ultimately does dictate where home feels right.
