A subway system is great if the people that it will serve best pay an extra tax to pay for it. There have been complaints that the Blue Line takes too long because of all of the stops as it travels toward uptown. The folks who get off on those stops short of uptown aren't working uptown in high paying jobs in the banking sector, and most aren't shelling out major shekels to attend football games. Provide low-cost housing as noted, and you can be sure that there will be fewer stops on all light rail, present and future.
Before Charlotte, surrounding counties, and the state embark upon a transit system to serve the rich folk in the exurbs, the city of Charlotte and surrounding areas need to consider one pressing need: low-cost housing affordable in Cornelius, Davidson, Huntersville, Myers Park, Dilworth, (skip Ballantyne because I live there), Waxhaw, and Belmont.

First off, a stop in Belmont would most likely be met with a light rail line with stops in Gastonia & Kings Mountain. Light rail from Gastonia was brought up over 10 years ago & CATS told them to stuff it, or pay for the whole thing to Uptown. There isn't much trust of CATS at this point, west of Charlotte, but people want light rail.
There used to be commuter rail to Uptown, when it was downtown, with stops in Belmont/Mt Holly, Gastonia, & Kings Mountain. Train lines are for everyone.
The city of Charlotte is proposing to build a transit tunnel under uptown, If that were to be a approved that's the closest we'd get to having a Subway. Subways aren't cost efficient in todays world.
