My wife and five year old kid are coming to Charlotte in a weeks time and I need to find an apartment for them. Her office is in south college street. Please suggest the apartment community which has good elementary school close by. My wife can commute by train or bus. Is tyvola apartment a good option? Any good schools close by? I have little time to act.

Do you mean "Tyvola Center Apts"? on Cameron Walk Ct? This elementary school would be Nations Ford. Not sure of quality - it's almost entirely black and hispanic (about 50-50). If you move here, I recommend you apply for a magnet at Waddell Language Academy - it's right down the road and really excellent. Magnet applications are Dec 5-Jan 26 - and you have to be registered at an address by then.

As for regular Charlotte neighborhood schools, the southern part of the city is considered better. Perhaps around the Arboretum on 51 - she can take the 14 bus. Schools there are good all the way through high school.

Here is the portal where you can check school assignments:

Tyvola Center Apts management treats you as if they are doing you a big favor, they are sweet until you sign the lease and the very next moment they profile you, mainly if you are south Asian. Did you see the breeze ways in any of their buildings? They are full of spider webs, dirt, cig buds, bugs, stains and what not. The only reason people stay there is its close to public transit. From the management to the maintenance team, they all profile you.

First give us your budget, then we can make suggestions on places to check in to.

In general I would not live along Tyvola myself.

I would check out the apartments complexes along Carmel or Quail Hollow, or Providence. No light rail, but there are bus lines and far better schools. You are too late for the lottery to get into the popular magnet schools like the language academy.

Not late at all. Just need to get here and register by January 12, 2015 in your home CMS school. Lottery period opens December 5, 2014 and runs through January 26, 2015. Everyone has an equal chance in the lottery assuming he/she enters the lottery by January 26.
