Have you thought about selling your furniture in CA and then buying in NC? Depending on how much you have, the cost for a major interstate carrier is not going to be cheap. I had a couple of friends faced with a cross country move. They sold everything over period of a couple of months and bought new stuff when they moved here to NC. Small items, such as cloths could be shipped via common carrier to a bonded warehouse in Charlotte for pick up when you arrive and get settled. Just a thought.
I priced several from NY to NC and they were a lot less than I thought they would be. Definitely less then selling my house full of furniture and rebuying everything.
I got estimates from Roadway, Mayflower and Allied. Bes sure they come to your home to give an estimate - not one done over the phone. They also seem to work a bit different on the Long Distance Move front - so ask them what happens to your belongings from Point A to Point B.
Also ask if the quotes are binding and if they include Full Value Insurance.
If you are willing to do the packing yourself, try UPack. They drop off the rear end of a semi trailer (with wheels) for as long as you need and then drive it to the destination. It's 27' long and 9'*9', so it fits a four bed house easily. You also pay for the footage you use, so it can be cheaper if you only use say 14 feet. We moved from Boston to Charlotte a week ago. We had the trailer in our driveway for 3 weeks while I packed it. They picked up and delivered in 5 days and that included the Thanksgiving holiday, and dropped off in my new driveway. Total cost was around $2,300. Would be more from CA to NC, but it was a really good experience. I do not work for them, and I was quoted $11,000 by the moving company my OWN company uses for relocations, so it was a much cheaper option. I also hired 4 movers for 3 hours to help unload and it cost $500. Totally worth it.
AlexfromMA - you were quoted $ 11K for a move from MA to CLT?? What a rip off - you should post their name so people know who to avoid.
I am coming from LI and have movers packing the truck, driving direct and unloading for just about $ 5000.
A 3 bedroom house, I packed but they are doing the rest.
Other quotes where they would have combined my stuff on a trailer with others (The still do the loading and unloading) ranged from $ 3200-$5000
That price was just nuts, MA is a bit further, but not that much further.
Given the moving company is the one used by my employer, it's best I don't state their name here. Not looking for any issues on my end, but I'd DM it if someone was really curious. I have no idea how they feel they can charge that much, but as soon as I got the quote I went out on my own. Per their quote, "The estimated costfor your move with a full pack by the van line is $10,841. If you decide to packyourself the estimated cost is $8,528.

That sounds about right, the costly part is the packing.
I had a few of those thanks to the company relocation packages (company paid it) and it was honestly the best thing ever. I didn't have to do a single thing. They sent a team in and they packed everything and anything 100 times better than I would have. And they labelled the heck out of the boxes so it was easy to locate which was what.
Thing that made me chuckle was seeing a bubble wrapped office plastic garbage can in a box by itself as if it was precious cargo.
But I wouldn't pay that price myself personally. I have done both a version of the upack or had the movers pick up everything. I lean toward the upack and hiring local movers. I had the trailer for a week and was able to put in boxes I packed little by little. Then I used the movers on the last day to move in all the big stuff. I liked that I didn't have to "live" with boxes as I was able to put them in the trailer.
United Van Lines just moved me from NYC to Charlotte, and it was a great experience. Full pack performed by the crew at origin (Holman Moving Systems of NJ) and delivered in Charlotte (Armstrong Relocation Services.)
I would never pack my own belongings again, and I would use United Vane Lines for sure. Both Holman and Armstrong had great crews...
