I have a special needs child that was at Weddington Elementary and this exact same thing happened to him with the "laps" punishment except for him it was running them in the hot sun and humidity - 1 mile to be exact in full clothes, no water, etc. We spoke with the principal and pointed out that it is illegal for teachers to discipline children with IEP's any way they decide to on a whim and they apologized and it never happened again. But the majority of Union County teachers seem to be completey ignorant about IEP's and laws regarding special needs kids in general in my experience.
And in the case of this little girl in the original post, even if she wasn't technically special needs that punishment is grotesque for a child with leg problems. That teacher should have some consequences herself to say the very least.
I find it hard to swallow that some of these kids are walking laps everyday b/c their parents are too irresponsible to sign their folder. I thought parents were supposed to be responsibe for kids, not vise versa.
Well maybe if the parents slow down and take interest in the most important thing in their life, their offspring, such would fail to be as commonplace as you allude. Not talking to you, just the majority of dual earner families only persuing two careers to keep up with the proverbial " Jones' ".

I totally agree. keeping up with the Jones' has gotten so out of hand. It's really sad how a lot of parents are so displaced in their childrens education these days. I've seen it first hand. Equally as sad though are some of the poor decisions made my teachers these days.
As far as the recess/no recess issue is concerned...
By law, schools are required to provide 30 minutes of moderate activity a day. How the school chooses to do this is up to them (PE, recess, having the kids run in place for a minute 30 times a day if they want). At most schools, recess is how that time is accounted for, which means teachers can't take it away as punishment. Walking laps is still being active; sitting in the principals office is not.
I work at a middle school and we have "activity time" instead of recess, which cannot be taken away from the kids as punishment.
This thread is 6 days old. Please tell me that something has been done in this situation to investigate the alleged activities and some kind of resolution or action is in the works.
The alleged activities have been investigated. I have no idea what, if any, resolution or action has been taken at this time.
I hope that is not the schools way of sweeping it under the rug as if it never happened.
