The Observer had an article on three homicides that took place this weekend. As I read through the article, I came across the name of one victim. Poor guy (apparently) was from Liberia, and someone had killed him in a botched robbery.
I ask this out of sheer interest:
What ethnic groups are in Charlotte, outside of White, Black, and Latino? Apparently, there's an African community in East Charlotte, and I know there are Vietnamese communities as well.
All of this is a surprise ...The City covers quite a bit (in square miles), and I don't get to see all of the diversity within CLT.
So...what smaller ethnic groups exist within CLT? I know that there are large Indian communities around Ballantyne, and around University City.
Is there an inflow of Europeans as well? I was told that there's a notable German population around Greenville, though I am not aware of any in CLT.
And when did these demographic shifts start? Does UNC cover any local trends/demographic changes? I've always been fascinated with different cultures...

Let's see. I currently have students from Kenya, Ghana, Nigeria, Viet Nam, Thailand, Honduras, El Salvador, Mexico, Dominican Republic, Venezuela, Turkey, Haiti and Congo.
But I honestly can't think of a nationality that isn't in some way represented in Charlotte, even if there are only a few.

What timeframe are we talking about, when you were in high school? I really gotta get out and explore the City more...Charlotte does indeed have a lot

That's amazing, and surprising to see that you have students from Africa.
The only thing I miss in CLT, are the lack of European markets (e.g. Italian). Even so, Charlotte has a nice mix of residents.

The German population around Greenville, SC would be there because of the BMW plant. I've run into Germans at the Gastonia & Shelby Aldi stores. I would think that you'd also find Germans in Aldis in Charlotte.
The Wow Supermarket in Gastonia is supposed to be the largest facility for that chain. It carries a blend of stock for Mexican & Caribbean cooking.
Ethnic grocery stores are usually a good place to find ethnic populations. However, some ethnic foods have become mainstream. Some chains might have certain items that attract specific ethnic populations.
There's an Italian shop in Cornelius. Quite a fair bit of Asians too. We have the Dragon boat festival in Cornelius every spring in May
Surprised to hear about an Asian population ...the Italian shop you reference - you're not talking about Ferruci's Market (Deli), are you?

I've kinda dismissed a lot, because marketeers are *hard* at work in CLT (e.g. inventions like the SoLo moniker) - thus I thought the diversity they claim was more a marketing creation than anything else.
While I am familiar with the significant Indian & Chinese population here...the thought of smaller ethnic groups was/is a nice surprise .

There are German companies in Gastonia & Kings Mountain.
Wow Supermarket started in Monroe, but the Gastonia store is the largest. When I've been there, my guess is that 50 - 60% of the customers are Hispanic. It's in the former Compare Foods which was once a Winn Dixie. Gastonia has a significant Puerto Rican population.
There's a visible Asian population west of Charlotte, but not as visible as their presence in Hickory. I wish that H Mart would open in Gastonia.
