Hi,

I am based if Asia and am being relocated to Charlotte. I would like to find out about cost of living in Charlotte. I have never lived in the US before.

My office will be in uptown and I have a family with 2 kids aged 4.

What woulld be the cost of renting a house with 3 bedrooms in uptown or south charlotte?

Do kids go to kindergarten at age 4? What are the good options for kindergartens and what are the approximate costs?

Thanks
P

There are not many houses in uptown, it is mostly a business district - though there are condominiums and apartments. Homes there are in 4th Ward and they tend to be pretty expensive.

Renting a home with 3 bedrooms in a good area of south Charlotte will start at $1300, but could go up to at least $1700.

Children start kindergarten at age 5. There are plenty of great public school kindergartens that won't cost you a thing. If you want private schools, expect to pay anywhere from $5000 to 10,000 a child.

I would suggest a preschool program. These are typically offered by local churches. I don't believe they let 4 year olds enter public kindergarten. Private schools, sure, but not CMS.

There are some Pre-K programs in CMS, but they're Montessori-based and difficult to get into. The lottery for those programs end in June. There are other magnet programs that are great: Home

There's also Bright Beginnings Pre-K for CMS, but it's typically for at risk children in low performing districts.

If you're looking for good neighborhood schools: Eastover, Dilworth, Sharon and Selwyn Elementaries. They're all located in desirable neighborhoods and have great test scores.
