In Charlotte, "downtown" IS Uptown.

It was, I was told, called uptown because the highest elevation in the area is in the city at Trade and Tryon, the intersect where BOA Corporate happens to be.

Actually in 1974 the city council officially named it “uptown” after pressure from the local merchants. Places like Southpark Mall that opened in 1970 had resulted in fewer downtown shoppers. The majority of the people, myself included, had referred to it as downtown, as in central business district, before.

“Uptown” was used before that, since the 1800s at least. “Downtown” took over in the mid 1900s until the early 70s.

Yes I know but I was using more recent terms and why it’s uptown today.

The location of the current HQ of BB&T is in Winston-Salem. Charlotte does have office space but they'll have to make a determination as to what is needed as some jobs will be in Winston-Salem and some will be in Atlanta.

I read the threads for both other locations. I feel bad for the people in Winston-Salem. The thread on the Atlanta board should make some of those posters ashamed of themselves. Don't let them upset you. The merger will have to be approved and job locations determined.

If you're certain that you will be relocated, start a thread of your own. Start making trips up here to get a lay of the land. Good luck!

A bank that large should result in a nice sized new tower in Charlotte to house the HQ. It will be interested to see what they build.
