Atlanta-based SunTrust Banks and southeastern rival Winston-Salem, N.C.-based BB&T said Thursday they will merge to create the sixth-largest bank in the U.S., a combination that will cost Atlanta a Fortune 500 headquarters.
It would’ve been terrible regardless. They can’t recruit or retain talent out there. Rather it be Charlotte than Atlanta. Not only is it great news in general, but it’s even more awesome that it’s a bank.

If only Wells and Ally would just make the move and make CLT the official HQ also

I worked for Barclays Bank's Charlotte operations in the early 90's before an accident forced me to retire, so I'm familiar with the banking industry in Charlotte. I agree with you on all points. Though you really feel for the Winston Salem community, these banks have to stay competitive in terms of recruiting talent and turing a profit in terms of operating costs. This is why so many banks have major national and world branches in Charlotte. Charlotte offers both.
