Hello!

We are moving down the Charlotte (Ballantyne) in just 50 days!! We are thinking of buying a new car in NY but I'm a bit confused about the car tax in Charlotte.

Do you have to pay a sales tax when you first buy it and also once a year? Thanks!!

There's no sales tax on motor vehicle purchases in North Carolina.

However, there's a "one-time" Highway Use Tax (HUT). Most newcomers bringing their car/trucks into the state will pay a maximum of $150 per vehicle. Current NC residents will pay 3% of purchase price. Tax is collected when the vehicle is registered with the state DMV.

Details - NCDOT Division of Motor Vehicles: Highway Use Tax (HUT)

Thanks!! So will we have to pay this 3% when we move to NC and register our cars or is this just if you buy a new car? Thank you so much for this...I have been looking for this answer forever!

If the vehicle(s) was titled in your current state for at least 90 days, your HUT tax will be $150 or less depending on its value. See the above DMV web link for details.

Yes, we also have to pay taxes on our cars here every year to your local county. The cost is based on their estimated value of your car. We paid around $300 this year for both of our cars together.

Property tax is an annual local tax on buildings, land, tagged and untagged motor vehicles, watercraft, RVs, and aircraft. The actual tax rate varies widely depending on where you live, such as county and city, for those living within the corporate boundaries. Otherwise, just the county.

License plate renewal and vehicle inspection are also yearly.
