We just purchased a lot in Statesville in a neighborhood just south of Buffalo Shoals Rd (Harbor Watch). We are still a few years out from building but were wondering what sorts of critters we would encounter while hiking, gardening, etc?
We currently have frequent sightings/encounters with deer, rabbits, raccoons, beavers, woodchucks, and bears but didn't know if they are also in this corner of Iridell County, or if maybe there are others we don't typically see here in NJ? What are the common critters that might complicate our plans for a vegetable garden?
I know the area and the street in question. You should be fine. People don’t talk about the wildlife like that around here. You may see a deer or two, but they know how to avoid people.
I live in a pretty diverse area in north Mecklenburg. Despite density, we have problems with deer eating things we don't want eaten and we occasionally have issues with cayotes. The good thing is that cayotes occasionally kill the cats that kill the baby rabbits and other wonderful creatures in the area. Probably not much difference in the wildlife in N.C. and N.J. Watch out for copperheads.
We have coyotes and fox around here also, forgot about those because they usually are out of sight for the most part, at least during daylight hours, as they try to steer clear of humans if they can. The bears would rather not be around if they can help it but they also feel quite free to wander around when they like, especially on garbage day for the easy pickin's.
We have snakes around here, too, usually nonvenomous but rattlers are not uncommon and there are occasional reports of copperheads so even that won't be that different but to hear some folks tell it we sort of expected larger reptiles possibly even though I would have thought that those would be infrequent and in the more coastal areas, if at all. I have come within 20 feet or so of bears on a few occasions (I think we surprised each other) but have yet to encounter a gator and didn't know if those were rumors or not.
