I received this email this evening. If you know the person who might be missing this camera, instructions for retrieving it follow.

Good afternoon!
The CMPD is seeking the public's assistance in identifying the owner(s) of a high-end camera*we believe was stolen in a car break-in or home burglary. We would like to return the property to the owners. They may not know the camera has been stolen since we have no theft reports matching the description of this particular camera. It appears to be new, perhaps purchased around Christmas-time. It is an Olympus E510, 10 megapixel digital camera with two lenses. The camera was in a Tamrack bag. Anyone with information about the owners should contact Ofc. B. Ashley by email at <mailto:bashley@cmpd.org>bashley@cmpd.org or by telephone at*704-432-2443.

Um yea, why do I get the feeling they found something 'not so pleasant' on the camera and would like to arrest the owner?

My thoughts exactly. Or maybe something in the camera bag.

What? No one thinks that the CMPD would actually try to recover stolen goods?

I wish they would send out an email saying they found the stuff stolen from my car in 2004.

Whether its a trap or not, its a good idea, if they recover unknown stuff that could be stolen property.

You are going to notice a missing DSLR. Period. I knwo where mine is and would immediately notice its absence should it grow legs and walk off with someone.

And why would you tell everyone on a mailing list what you found? Why not say "Found: digital camera. Make/model. Call if you think its yours."?

ROFL!!! I thought this at first, too . . . like a "sting" operation, but then I saw on TV the other nite where they had caught up w/ some thugs who had been ripping off Steele Creek . . . PD specifically stated the thugs have been breaking into cars in Steele Creek, and they showed all the items laid out on a table. I noticed two cameras. They also specifically stated . . . that they were trying to match up items w/ filed police reports, but if anyone saw something that they had stolen but was not reported, to contact them. To me, it seemed like PD was truly trying to get back stolen items to the rightful owners.

But part of me wondered, when I got the email, if there were images on the recovered camera that made PD extremely interested in finding the owner, Hee Hee. Then I felt like I must be a very jaded person, b/c surely it was just an attempt to return items.

Now you all have made me wonder again . . . LOL!!!!!

I wonder why the police just don't trace the serial number from the manufacturer to the retail store where it was sold?
