Those cuts are company-wide, not limited to Charlotte, and from a workforce of 119000. The sky is not falling!

Yes, I agree I think that the 6% of 300+ million people in the USA without a job isn't really that bad. Get over it unless you are one of those people at Wachovia.

Guess the OP also didnt read that 6350 of those positions are open and contractors. That means that they're technically not even employees. Of course, leave it to our crappy newspaper to paint the picture far worse than it really is.

A free market, capitalist economy at work. Ups and downs come and go, things will get better eventually. It's good to see they are implementing some serious strategies to rebound from mistakes.

4k of the positions cut are also job openings. So really the net number of job loses will be 6K.

Actually, where do most of the contractors and firms that support Wachovia locate their business and keep their staff? ..... Charlotte. Therefore these cuts will have a large impact on the Charlotte economy.

The banks and financial services sector is taking the brunt of this recession, guess what city markets itself as the country's second largest financial services hub? .... Charlotte

Thankfully Charlotte has tried to diversify itself over the past few years so this recession should not hurt Charlotte as much as it would have in the past.

I think it will still hurt though. Hope I’m wrong

Actually, it didnt say what percentage of the cuts were existing contractors, so the cuts could be relatively small. Wachovia's not going anywhere, and Charlotte will be just fine.
