The other problem is the illegals are a protected species and are one of the main reasons that the state is broke and raising taxes
This I can relate to you ... being close to DC (ironically) is very bad. Fox News just recently reported that Alexandria, VA is right there with San Fran in protecting illegals. Supposed to be because of cheap labor - basically the well-to-do DC-ers need their cleaning people. Illegals get free transportation and all sorts of other free-ride craziness in town. I have done my research and I do not feel Charlotte will be nearly as bad. I am very excited about our relo.
Best of luck to you and your wife. I have a close friend at BoA - it's a great company.
I came from a similar area...Orlando. While not as pricey as CA, the cost of living was/is proportional to the respective incomes, I believe. In my opinion, Charlotte offers a relatively higher quality of life in the following respects:
- money: you can buy more here than most places
- housing: for $300k, you'll pretty much have a McMansion in most parts of Charlotte
- traffic: sure there's back ups, but if you drive more than 45 minutes during rush hour to get home, it's because you live out in the sticks
- cleanliness: as stated numerous times on this forum, this is one of the cleanest cities--almost eerily clean!
The good news is that if your wife works of BofA, you'll be centrally anchored to the city (assuming she works downtown in the HQ building). You wouldn't be corned to one side of the city.
We are an absolutely tax free city. Funny thing, the city pays people to bring their cars to town. I can't wait to get my rebate check for the purchase of my house in January. Just kidding, they like to tax around her, but it is better than most northeastern cities still (god knows for how long).
