Hi,

I am from Texas and in the process of working with a recruiter to gain a teaching position with CMS and wanted to know if anyone can offer advice on: (1) life as a new teacher in the system (2) CMS' help with relocation/transitioning into the system (3) career progression in the system, etc. Anything you can offer will help me in my consideration of teaching for CMS.

Thanks!

I know several CMS teachers and have been told the new teacher support isn't so great. Everythings glossy and pretty to get you in, then your thrown to the wolves.
I do not beleive any school system helps with relocation assistance, unless your a superintendent or something high level. Also, make sure you start working on getting your NC Teaching LIcense, this is the first stepping stone to working in NC.

Welcome and I hope you have a great time here!

My wife teaches in the CMS system, and says, "Good luck." Her experience has not been that good. They actually displaced her, and tried to put her in one of the worst schools in the system, almost giving her no choice. When she threatened to bail to another system, she was reassigned to a better school. The CMS system is full of problems. I would try York County, SC or Cabarrus County schools.

No offense meant to your wife, but if the best teachers we have (which I'm assuming your wife must be to have been asked to move) won't go to the schools where the most help is needed, how will we ever turn our struggling schools around?

I have always thought it was a much better plan to bus teachers than to bus students. Thank goodness we no longer bus students, but I do think teachers ought to be hired with the understanding that they will be asked to serve where they are most needed.

XNYgirl is right, are you working on your NC license already?

Charlotte Mecklenburg has some really great schools and some totally failing schools. But we are a big city now and we have big city social ills. If you are an experienced, seasoned teacher I hope you get a job in the system. If you are a young, inexperienced teacher you might want to consider one of the smaller neighboring systems instead (like Cabarrus, Gaston or Union counties). Best of luck to you!

Loves, CMS "displaces" teachers based on lack of experience, not success. When numbers are low, the last hired is displaced in most cases. The only exceptions are those with multiple or more attractive license areas.

It would have been unsafe for my wife to be at the school she would have been sent to. I genuinely feared for her safety. Do you know what a alternative school is for? My wife still teaches in a title 1 school, her fourth year teaching in a school that is Title 1, and there is a big difference between these schools, and her safety at an alternative school. It was a safety issue alone.

I can completely understand not wanting to be volunteered for the Derita Alternative School. My comments were regarding the regular public schools

My wife has seven years of teaching experience, and you're right, she was the last hired. She was clearly better than the other teachers she taught with, but seniority rules....

Well, I didn't give the specific school, but I am glad you understand my concern now.
