I've had many Southern friends over the years & they always mentioned that the thing that they missed most, while living in the north, were the mill stores.

It always pained them to pay the retail price, or even a sale price for yarn.

With the demise of so many mills, are there still places, within a reasonable drive from Charlotte, where you can get yarn at a really good price?

AC Moore occasionally gets mill ends, is that now going to be the best bet for cheap yarn?

Wow, I have no idea. I'm a knitter and would love to find cheap place. Most of the small stores where I shop are very pricey. The only inexpensive place seems to be Walmart and they have cut back significantly on their craft supplies. I like some of the on-line stores such as Elann (www.elan (broken link)n.com/) and Yarn Market. If you find a good, cheap plce , please, DM me.

Barb, AC Moore is far & away the cheapest for yarn where I am. They frequently sell closeouts & clearance yarns, but it's a limited time offer. Those prices blow away anything online. Also I currently shop at store #1, so I don't know if they are the designated close-out place or if the whole chain has those items. I have gotten mill ends, but sometimes they are not appropriate.

I've also occasionally gotten a few skeins at Dollar Tree (name brand for $1) & they can't be beat if what they have suits your needs.

I don't mind driving a distance, as long as I can have other reasons to go to an area where a store is located. I plot out my moves to get the most done for my time & gas.
