The storm water fee doesn't bill the amount of runoff your generate from your property. The storm water fee is a way to evenly distribute the cost of storm water improvements across all properties in the city. These improvements go to help all residents in all parts of the city, even if they're not in your exact neighborhood. In many cases, they fix flooding problems that cut off road access which we might all use.

Plus, even if it were billing the amount of runoff from your property, a rain barrel only collects about 3 or 4 square feet of water until it fills up. Your lot is probably somewhere in the neighborhood of 0.25 acres which is 10,890 square feet. Far from making an impact on runoff.

And you do get a benefit from conserving water: a lower water bill resulting from a lower billing rate (since we're on a tiered system where higher users pay more for their water).

My water bill is routinely in the $30 range for my wife and I with a dishwasher and all the other typical stuff of a house. Those that have higher bills might have a pinhole leak or use more than they really think.

Sewer Charges: $ 54.72
Storm water charges: $ 7.92

I do not get it. Sewer charges. FOR WHAT? I have a big creek in my back yard . . . run off water goes into that creek. Seems I have already done my part w/ collecting run off water. If the charges are per sq. foot of deeded land, i only have a little over half an acre and the portion at the back w/ the creek is a flood plane, so not like that is useable land.

Would someone please explain to me how clean, potable water that I consume is costing me less than sewer and storm water????
Sewer charge is for all the "crap" that they force us to pay..(just thought I'd throw in a little humor since my water bills in NC freak me out)

If you water your lawn like I do...you will have to hold your heart before you open the bill..their famous tier system is a major rip-off...I screwed up my sprinkler clock programming and it was the first season..and my sprinklers were going on for hours until I got my first water bill of $340.00 and then my next for $250.00 so it was an expensive lesson...

I have ridiculous water bills since I moved here, and I think a lot of it is probably from my sprinkler system. We'll see how it changes now that we have it shut off for the season. I was pretty shocked when I saw it too!

Water bills here are a drop in the bucket compared to the metro Boston area.
