LOL...now my fertile mind is whirring...How about:

Bert's Bees (mascot could be a bee?)

Or Hi-C's (oranges)

Gonna have to come up with something catchy, 'cause "Let's go Cuth-bert-son!" is quite a mouthful. (i.e. like Parkwood's "P-Dub")

OK, I'm done. Sorry for having too much fun at your expense. We weren't exactly excited when they announced Marvin Ridge's name either (what's with all the ridges these days??) But, it grows on you.

"Cuthbertson" makes sense, but can someone explain why the elementary school, that used to be called "Elon" elementary, is now called "Polo Ridge"? Is there a polo club nearby, or did they want the name to sound rich and snobby? (No offense to anyone who's children attend that school.)

And now, the new school under construction on Ardrey Kell (towards 521) is called "Elon". Don't get it.

stmaarten, the name "Elon" goes back to the founding of a home for children which was built right near where the new schools are back in the early 1900's. I believe it was called "Elon" for Elon College which founded these schools in various areas over the years as part of it's spiritual mission to the communnity at large. It existed there until not too long ago when the school property was sold and the Elon campus relocated to another part of Charlotte. I think it is nice that someone is trying to preserve the history of the area in the naming of the new public school

Thanks for the info, Loves.
I was just curious why they took the name of one school, changed it to a different name and then renamed another school with the "old" school's original name.
I thought it was code for: "we are building a new school here, but this is just a temporary name".

Actually the school was always to be called Polo Ridge. This school was completed before Elon's (on Ardrey Kell) was -- but because much of Elon's population was coming from Hawk Ridge (the most overcrowded school in Mecklenburg at the time) the powers that be decided to start the school (Elon) but house it in Polo Ridge's building (since much of Polo Ridge's population was coming from McKee which was also overcrowded but not as much as Hawk Ridge.) I hope I didn't confuse you more.

Wow! The school board appointed a committee to come up with a name and this is the best they could do?

Well, actually, the committee threw open the question to the community, in lots of different ways (from ConnectEd phone calls, to newspapers, to emails from the schools, etc.) From what I could gather from the newspaper article in today's Enquirer Journal, Cuthbertson was the MOST REQUESTED name for the school. Several of the school board members expressed frustration for the lack of creativity, but agreed that majority wins. According to the article, other names suggested were Old Hickory (President Andrew Jackson's nickname), Waxhaw High, and Lawson High.

Guess the moral of this story is - the squeeky wheel gets the grease, or
if you have an opinion or suggestion and you keep it to yourself, you have no one to blame but yourself when things go another way...

Seems they came up with original names for both schools. I joked with my hubby that is what it was going to be named, guess I should have taken him up on the bet. A nice dinner uptown would have been nice, oh well.
