I have been living in Aiken, SC for the last year and have never been to Charlotte. I work with several people from Charlotte and hear some VERY nice things about your fair city.
My husband and I are planning a trip the weekend of December 13 to see Terry Johnson's Flamingos perform at Owen Auditorium. (I am their webmaster -- www.terryjohnsonsflamingos.com.) I am looking for a 3-star or better hotel to stay in while we are there, but not knowing the area I don't know the good from the bad or the ugly. We have not been on any sort of "vacation" (mini or otherwise) in a VERY long time, so I want to be "pampered". Any suggestions?

Regarding up scaled hotels: I travel to CLT once a month . I've been satisfied with the Holiday Inn in Uptown. Changing my hotel for next week's trip to the Courtyard Charlotte City Center. Looks good on paper and it's very close to a club I belong to making it conv. for meetings.
Check these 2 out on the web.
There is only one hotel in downtown charlotte that has a rating of less than three. It is the Day Inn on North Tryon Street. It isn't really bad, just old. The only other hotel that is pretty good but a walk of several blocks from downtown is the Blake. All of the others that posters have mentioned are very good. Also, they are all in safe areas. Don't stay at a hotel near Ovens as that is not a safe area for lodging.
Marriott City Center is nice as a hotel, but don't eat there. I used to work in their kitchen, and reserving food is commonplace.
I'm staying there on Wed. and didn't have plans to eat there anyway but what is meant bi "reserving food?" Hope you don't mean that they are serving food that someone else left.
