For those who have cautioned, I do have a job and the office in located southeast of the airport. Thus the reason for looking south.

Thanks again to all of you.
Great! With that in mind continue looking at south Charlotte, but also consider looking just over the SC line at Fort Mill and Tega Cay, great little towns with good schools

Also in that area (SC) are the Charlotte Knights which are a AAA feeder team to the White Sox.

Default Palisades

We moved here from the west coast a few years ago, and bought a house in the Palisades. Let me know if you have any specific questions. We looked both north & south of the city. Of course it depends on what you're looking for, but for us we loved the combination of amenities, neighborhood, and open space. Most people in the neighborhood are actually transplants, as well, so there's an interesting eclectic mix of backgrounds. I have neighbors from Germany, Norway, New Jersey, and SoCal. It's also very close knit, and I know almost all our neighbors.

We have two kids as well.

If you're from Chicago, any discussions of traffic in almost any area of Charlotte will largely be a non-issue for you. I'm from SoCal, and still marvel at what people here consider "traffic."

Anyway, best of luck in your move!!!

I moved to Clt from the midwest last spring. I can't stand it here. The schools are bad. I hope I don't have to stay here for very long.

We moved to Brookhaven when it was first developed and it's a great neighborhood. Many young families w/kids 3-15yrs old. The ammenities are top shelf and Builder/Developer has one of the better reputations in Charlotte. There is a K-5 school next to development. I've been to Palisades and it is another great neighborhood with wonderful ammenities.

Sanna, it IS very different. And, the schools...well, I understand where you are coming from. But, it is not a bad place. If you are able, you can home school your kids here, which is not a "normal" thing in the midwest. The cost of living is somewhat lower here and the weather is certainly better!! It is easy to get homesick and feel isolated. I hope that things improve for you!

My experience has been just opposite. We LOVE the schools...it all depends on where you go. Rest assured, their are some fabulous schools around here. I moved from KS four years ago and barring an emergency situation back home, I would not go back willingly.

Maybe try a different part of the city. What exactly is it you do not like?

I have to agree somewhat as we moved from OH and the school was one of the best in the state. You have to search out the better schools in CLT and make sure you live in their school zone. We're fortunate to have our kids in accelerated classes (AIG) which improves the learning experience. I think you need to make it a priority to search out the schools first and then find your home in CLT.

I had kids in Kansas schools, too - Shawnee Mission District, wh/ was ranked as one of the top in the nation at that time. I do feel that district, at that time, was superior to NC's schools overall. The elementary schools were typically new and beautifully designed, very robust staffing, demanding curriculum, high national scores, etc.

However, I think that there are many schools here that do compare to that same level of academic achievement. Johnson County was, at that time, ranked as one of the ten wealthiest, fastest growing counties in the nation. The demographics were not comparable to Charlotte's, except in specific schools. JoCo had little poverty anywhere in the county and so the demographics just didn't match up well w/ CMS as a whole.

That brings me to JORDYSMAMA's statement - there are great schools here - but you need to do your homework. In those schools, I think the comparisons would be very favorable to my kids' schools in Shawnee Mission.
