Visiting Charlotte for a day or so (Raleigh: neighborhoods, shops) - North Carolina (NC) - City-Data Forum

I'm going to be staying in Raleigh for about a month. On a weekend I was thinking of making a roadtrip down to Charlotte to explore the city and get a feel for it's character and neighborhoods. Any suggestions a particular streets I should drive around and neighborhoods to explore that are interesting? I like neighborhoods with small businesses, pubs, and coffee shops, something like that. Thanks
