Now that i've moved here, I'm have issues with gift giving from afar. Does anyone have any unique birthday gift giving ideas for friends or family members that are in other cities ? This is for a 31year old female.

A bottle of wine from a local vineyard or maybe a pottery piece or craft from an NC/Charlotte artist.

When I send my friend her b-day and x-mas gifts, I have included (just for fun) hushpuppie mix and red velvet cake mix. Things that aren't a staple in So Cal, so sending a little taste of the South. I'll probably include some BBQ sauces this year, different flavors from different regions.

Perhaps you could elaborate. Not sure what difference being in another state makes. Just get what you would if you were back there and mail it to her. Other than that, the poster suggesting sending local southern gifts was a really good one.

I was looking for something creative other than sending a card or gift certificate. nascarnancy's idea is a good one and along the lines of what I was looking for. Can you give me the name of some local vineyards?

I'm not a huge wine drinker but I have had Biltmore Estate wine and haven't yet tried Childress. Biltmore Wine is from the Estate in Asheville, the largest home in America. Childress is actually Richard Childress, NASCAR owner. Dale Earnhardt Sr. was his driver. I've heard really good things about the Childress wine. You can get them in the local markets and I've seen Biltmore at Trader Joe's. Also, attached a page of NC wineries.

make sure you are allowed to ship wine to whatever state she is in. Some states have laws about that.

Might be safest to order them online. I mailed a couple of bottles to my dad and the postmaster asked if there were any liquids in the box and I said wine. He turned and said "don't tell me that", and shipped them anyway.

Shelton vineyards have excellent wine - several country clubs choose Shelton as their house wine.

A friend from New Mexico sent me some books she knew I'd like with a t-shirt and a cloth bag from an independent bookstore there. I loved it!
