My boyfriend and I are thinking about a move to Charolette or ATL from Massachusetts. He is black and I am white. How is Charlotte with IR couples? We are thinking that we would like to decide where to move next summer.
Take it for what it's worth, since I've only lived in the metro Charlotte area for 2 years, but I've seen plenty of interracial couples, and never once have I seen anything negative or hostile toward them. Charlotte is a pretty progressive city, for the most part.
It's actually even better here than it was in the Nashville area, from where I moved. I think you'll find most people here pretty accepting of most things.

You'd be fine in either city - better go where you can find a job
You likely will not be given any special privileges or recognition if that is what interracial friendly means. Why would Charlotte be any different from anyplace else? I agree with the previous poster. What difference does it make? How you are perceived and accepted by any community depends on how you act and contribute.
It depends on where you live and hang out. If you live in a low life area with low life people you will see low life things like racial prejudice. If you live in an upscale area you will see upscale behavior where who you marry or live with makes little differance.......You are the upscale type arent you?

What? I find your viewpoint odd. I know upscale people who are racially prejudiced. Money/education doesn't necessarily make people accepting of others. People are entitled to live the lives they choose as long as they're not breaking any laws. I like to think that the majority of people in any city and neighborhood feel the same way.
Sadly, it is a factor, even in the liberal North. He is a lawyer and I am an ESL teacher, so hopefully jobs will not be an issue. We just want a warmer climate. Sorry the topic has been beaten to death, new to the board. Peace

joyo1966 - You might be pleasantly surprised with the reception you receive in Charlotte! Mixed race couples seem to be much more common down here than you might find in Boston. It seems many areas of what may be referred to as the "New South" have more "enlightened and mature attitudes" about race than the North. This was surprising to me being from NJ! With your specific educational training in ESL you might find job hunting a bit easier than if you were a plain ol' English or History teacher! Give the Charlotte Region a thorough look! It might end up being the perfect fit!
