My family of 5 ( 3 kids under 8) is thinking of moving to NC from CA. Could someone that has children please give me a list of neighborhoods that are extremely family friendly? We are looking to spend around $300K or less for a house. I prefer 1920's historic homes. We need SAFE SAFE SAFE! Good schools and a yard. HELLLLLPPPP! Thanks!

Default Just moved here from So Cal

Hi, Just moved last November from So. Cal. Did a BUNCH of research prior to the move. I can only give you my 2 cents worth but I'm sure you'll find lots of helpful info on this forum.

My kids are in Elem School (one will be going into middle school this fall). In my research I found that South Charlotte seems to have the best schools if you stay in Mecklenburg County. Any schools that funnel into Ardrey Kell or Providence High Schools are good. Union County has GREAT schools as well as Fort Mill which is right across the border into SC (York Co). Most of these areas are also great areas to live. We ended up in Ft Mill.

Can't tell you about historical homes. Sorry.

I definately agree. Look for something in the South Charlotte area. I'm a college student that recently graduated from a high school in the area. They really are the best schools in the city. Like Baggleflap said above, Ardrey Kell and Providence are the best high schools.

You may also want to try the Myers Park area. The neighborhoods show a great sense of "community" and it really has a family feel. Myers Park high school is excellent as well. Just keep your search in the S Charlotte area.

There are a number of websites that have information on schools and crime stats. If you'd like the links send me a pm.

South Charlotte is wonderful; however, another area/neighborhood to check out is the Highland Creek community. This community is located in north Charlotte and is in Mecklenburg and Cabarrus Counties. Currently there are approximately 3800-4000 homes. The homes are priced from the $100's to $400's. The elementary school assigned to the Cabarrus Cty side of the community is Cox Mill Elementary. The elementary school assigned to the Meck Cty side is Highland Creek Elementary...located right in the community. You can find out more info on the Highland Creek website. Definitely worth a look! Good Luck!!
