I visited an Italian market yesterday in north Mecklenburg. I picked up some items that I wanted to test for goodness. The owner approached me and told me that they wanted to bring New York style Italian to the area and said they were the only place in the area to offer authintic.
The funny thing is that I have been to two other Italian markets and was told the same exact thing about being the first to bring such a thing to the area. Who has an opinion on which is the best Italian market around? I think that the three that I visited were good, but nothing to write home about. Other than the bread, everything else wasn't special at all. But, the excellent bread is good enough for me. Any suggestions for other places to check out.
Pasta and Provisions is the only one I know of. I haven't tried the food but it does look good. A lot of the stuff they have you can get in other stores for less (for instance, Boars Head meat from the deli) but they have a lot of homemade stuff.
We have two in my area. One is the Italian Market (Ferrucci's) at Shops on the Green and Derado's Market at Magnolia Plaza. Ferrucci's
Market is very NYish and has its specialties, but is mostly a butcher shop. Derado's has more specialties and less butchering.

You know I was thinking about posting something last night. I am looking for a good place to get the real good (and stinky) provolone cheese and mortadella. My family loves both and they are coming down for Christmas and I'd like to have them on hand.

Provolone cheese can be bought anywhere, ie. Harris Teeter. Mortadella is trickier. If you can't find it at a Fresh Market or a specialty grocer, I am sure you can buy it at Furrucci's in Shops on the Green, Cornelius.
I know you can buy the normal sliced crap provolone at any grocery store. I'm looking for the good stuff.
Earthfare has a really good cheese selection. They have nice, sharp and dry provolone there.
