Wanted to start a thread where we could list a short description or "blurb" about each suburb or neighborhood in the Charlotte area. The best way for those of us considering moving to Charlotte to decide what area is best for us is to come and see for ourselves, but I, personally, think it would be really helpful to be able to get a good idea of the types of neighborhoods and suburbs that exist to narrow it down somewhat...since the area as a whole seems pretty large and diverse.

Here's an example of the kind of info I'd be interested in learning:

Anytown - Rural, lots of farmland, minimal shopping, need to go into the "City" to find most retail/entertainment, etc. Housing options for 3/2 sfh start at $135K

Mytown - Lots of older, established homes, mostly families, abundant shopping/entertainment options within town, walkable. Housing options for 3/2 sfh start at $200

You may want to check out Newcomer.com (broken link) It's not exactly what you are looking for but it's a good start.

Union County (Marvin, Weddington, Waxhaw): great neighborhoods, lots of families, lots of transplants (not many natives here, unfortunately), great schools, great shopping, not very far from uptown, housing is still affordable (although that's relative to specific needs). To sum it all up: Great place to live and raise a family.

Cornelius

one of the lake norman towns
small town feel with a small main street (a couple of antique shops, childrens boutique, cool home store, etc..)
2 elementary schools
Jetton Park- great lake side park with beach for kids (no wading), great nature trail, bike rental, tennis courts, concession stand and SHADY playground
3-4 other parks (Ramsey creek also has lake access and a shady playground)
lots of shopping
I personally prefer Cornelius to Huntersville

Neighborhood- Oakhurst
walking distance to JV Washam elementary school (one of the best elementaries in lake norman area IMO..new principal next year who is supposed to be AWESOME..my husband works with his wife and he has young kids which is a plus IMO) Not terribly overcrowded..will have 4 portables next year

In the neighborhood we have great restaurant (131 Main) Young Chef's academy (cooking classes for kids) Super Suppers, Dilworth Coffee, Dry cleaners, Bank, Garage organizer store, Daycare, Dr's, Dentist etc...

Jr Olympic size pool with water fountain

Playground

Some houses back to woods (mine does )

Townhouses and smaller houses towards the front..larger towards the back

Rural feel but SO close to everything

< 5 min to Target, home depot, lowes, grocery store, restaurants

between exit 25-28

5-7 minutes to Birkdale Village

5-7 minutes to "downtown" Davison and the college

builders are Turnberry, Niblock, Gandy, Mike Jacoy, DR Horton and I'm sure a few others

Not sure of house price ranges..I think the most expensive is around $315k
(3200 sq feet)

HTH

Dilworth - Many bungalow homes (trying to keep historic feel) on smaller lots, family friendly, lots of restaurants/stores/drs along East Blvd (some in "houses"), active/lots of walking around streets to shops and parks (Latta and Freedom to name a few), feeds Myers Park High School

A couple miles to Uptown (just south of the city), close to CMC hospital, a few miles to South Park Mall.

Pricier - older, smaller homes going seem to start at 350k through the new houses that are over 1M (seems like many renovated homes on the market now are around 650-900k).
