So I called an agent to switch my car insurance to NC...well I was told 6months with liability only will be $1647.00 and apparently my NJ points are equal to 20 yes 20 points in NC...So I still have coverage on my car till 05/10 (BMW 530I)..what do I do...keep in mind all my points were from 2007...I was rather reckless with 2 speeding tickets and improper passing...I know I know but nothing since 07 so I have been good...and mind youI have had my dl since 16 so all my points were from one bad year...what do I do?

NC really punishes you for having points on your license I'm afraid! I think they hold it against you for 5 years from the last offense. What did the agent suggest you do?

giaa81 - How many points did you have in NJ? I thought they pulled your license there, if you had 12 points or more! If you're going to pay $1647 for six months coverage in NC, I shudder to think what your premiums were like in NJ! They must have been equal to the CMS yearly school budget!!! If I were you, I'd dump the Bimmer, buy an old Toyota Corolla and enter the Convent to help lower those rates!
Thanks everyone...I never had points till 2007 grr I had paid in NJ $3000 / yr for 2 cars...an 05 Honda Accord Coupe v6 fully loaded and an 05 Mercedes S430 both under my name...I had gotten into a very bad accident with the Mercedes and decided to get rid of it for the BMW. Since that day the accidents have been following me around...my ins company paid 30,000 out to fix the car they would not total the Mercedes since the value of the car was $92,000. the agent was not helpful I guess since I am such a high risk
Insurance points stay with you for 36 months. They come off in the order you get them. To have that many you have been a bad bad boy and thank GOD you are alive..........hope others you have had accidents with are.
You are right, but the accident was not 100% my fault...someone was coming in the wrong lane towards me...I swerved and hit another car and a pole...the tickets were from me just speeding on the highway ....my insurance got some of the money back bc of the no fault laws...but I understand there is no no fault here...I would never be reckless never and hurt anyone else...I had no choice otherwise I would have prob. died
the points are diff here I had 12...in nj 4pts x2 for speeding and 4pts for improper passing not from the accident...I was not issued anything for the accident since it was not my fault...07 was just a bad year for this girl...
Keep in mind that insurance points are not equal to driving points issued by a DOT. You probably don't have any NCDOT points unless you got a traffic ticket in this state. The insurance company however is dinging you for the NJ infractions and billing you based on their criteria here. You will need to call them to find out how long they intend to keep them on your record. NCDOT driver points last 3 years. It may or may not be the same for insurance transferred from another state.
Oh and if your liability paid to fix the results of an accident, you acquired a lot of insurance points for that. It doesn't matter whose fault it was. If you paid to fix it they hit you for that.
