Has anyone does this drive and is it fairly safe and straight forward?

I have a conference there next month that I am considering driving since the flight is about $700.

It would be me alone driving, and I'm not thrilled about making the 4 hour trip alone.

The plus would be that it would leave me with a vehicle to use while I'm there. The negative is that is a darn long trip to make alone!

Thoughts?

Safe, yes. Straight-forward, hardly. There's no direct route, and everybody has their own way of getting there. It would be insane to fly there though.

It would take you much longer to fly than to drive. Get a book on tape. It's an easy ride no matter which route you take.

Yup that's a concise summation. Its only going to take 4 hours if your unlucky enough to be held up at the train crossing.

It generally takes me less than 3 hours to get to North Myrtle, but I drive.......assertively. I go 218 to 74, then take 701 to 9. 218>>74>>501 will drop you right into the middle of Myrtle Beach. 218 is a nice ride out in the country with some fun roads, and it bypasses all that Monroe traffic. 74 is boring, and there are multiple LE agencies patrolling, although you can usually get away with 9-14 MPH over the limit if you're not being foolish.

$700 to MB? Are you chartering a plane?? I flew to England for a little more than that.

LOL! Isn't that the truth! I've found cheaper flights to London, Paris, and Hawaii as well.

Chicago: where are you leaving from? That will make a difference in your route. I personally think it's a straightforward drive, and when we go we stick to the interstates. All those backroad routes that everyone takes just take up too much time and energy. They don't save you anything in the long run.

OMGoodness!!!! Fly to Myrtle Beach?

Chicagomichauds - you can drive there in less than 4 hours! I drive to Sunset Beach often and I think I could do it with my eyes closed.

Coastalgirl is right - I too would stick to the main roads. I remember trying to write down the directions going the way my parents went... 'turn right at the fruit stand'.....

Good luck!

I used to go through all those little towns as well, because I was following someone or riding along. When I started driving to that area regularly, I finally looked at a map and realized it's much quicker to stay on major roads. Less stressful too.

Now I put the hammer down, turn the music up, and let the wind blast through my hair!

I know it's crazy: we need to use the specific program for booking our flights. That's the cost for round trip, direct flight. Nuts!
