I'm 90% sure I'll move to Charlottesville in the summer of '08 to teach and to get my Masters degree. I narrowed in on Charlottesville for the schools, the mountains, the smaller feel (I'm in DC right now), and - HOPEFULLY - for the people.

Will I find people in Charlottesville who like to hike and camp? Bike? Just generally be outside? Is it a dog-friendly town? A friendly town, in general? I've had trouble finding like-minded people here in DC... I'm just not in to clubs or politics or power.

Any recommendations or thoughts will be greatly appreciated!!

Outdoor Adventure Social Club of Greater Charlottesville, VA

I met lots of people through that club, including my wife, and can't say enough positive things about my experiences. I've been impressed with the organization and the number and variety of activities (1 or 2 daily) that appeal to both beginners and experts.

Also theres Outdoors at UVA, but I don't know as much about that organization. Apparently its open to Charlottesville/Albemarle residents and not just UVA undergrads.

Thanks so much, that organization looks great and it's definitely something I'll look into if I end up in Charlottesville.
