I don't know where they were/are finding them, but there was actually a very popular class of racing Kentucky and maybe Indiana and Illinois that consisted solely of Chevettes. It might still be a popular class today, but it's been a while since I've seen a Chevette in a junkyard even.
No matter how well the A-pillar of a small Aveo-sized car holds up, the small car is at a disadvantage when hit by something larger and heavier. IIHS did a report on this not too long ago and when the Fit and the Accord were tested head-on, the fit came out miserably. When the Fit was crashed alone, the A-pillar held up beautifully. The same goes when they crashed the Toyota Yaris and a Camry. I feel it is safe to assume that if they did crash an Aveo and a Malibu, the Aveo would fare horrendously as well. I just wouldn't want to be in the Smart ForTwo, which when crashed against a C-Class, went airborn and did a 360 in addition to crushing horribly beyond the A-pillar.
Not to get off-topic, but hat is one reason I would not buy a car that small. Some people may be willing to take the risk for a fuel economy advantage, but I'm not one of them.
I would not buy a car that small either!
I remember that recent test and how bad those smaller cars done. One reason I mentioned I would worry about the Aveo is that it already had some collapse of the a-pillar, just hitting another car its size.... I cant imagine the damage if it were to hit a larger car. One difference is at least the Fit, Yaris and Fit held up remarkably well against cars of the same size and we seen how bad they done against Accord, Camry and C-Class, so again, the Aveos results would likely be even worse.
seems to me the old "Joey Chitwood auto thrill show" used Chevettes for some stunts. Any car on 2 wheels that is good enough for them, it's good enough for me!

You really are not saying much by claiming the Chevette was better than the Citation, seeing as it was the most recalled car in history (and still may hold that record.) I had a Chevette in 1985. It was better than the Yugo. If Chevy brought it back, there is no doubt that it would be inferior to the Corolla and the Civic. Face it guys, The big 3 would rather try to make you feel unpatriotic for not buying their car than to actually make a great car!
I saw another Chevette today... looked like an '83 or '84 and was a 4dr. Still in really good shape - a older man was driving it... speaking of Citations, right behind it was that '84 Citation that belongs to a man in that area that bought it new.
You would be amazed at all of the 1980s General Motors cars are on the roads around here.
