Default Big difference from non-peak to rush hour...

In the very early morning / late night you can make the under 30 mile trip is probably right about 35 minutes, as the tollway leads directly to the airport.

Other times the trip is a solid wall of traffic that even when weather is good is going to see average speeds WELL BELOW the posted 55 mph limit AND the couple of miles of older surfacce streets /those that pass near shopping will often have delays of multiple traffic light cycles. Figure an hour.

In the unfortunate case of weather related traffic incidents or just a snarl caused by people gaping at a car pulled over by police the sky can be the limit -- 90 minutes or more...

Lots of great housing exists in Mundelein itself. But if you want to live elsewhere try to stay within 10 miles. Traffic on east west roads does not move well. Roads are laid out for NW/SE travel. Commuting on the North Central service is also possible depending on schedule. That line also goes to O'Hare, about a half hour ride from Mundelein.

If you can bump your housing budget up to 325-350 towns like Buffalo Grove and Lake Zurich may be affordable. Even north Arlington Heights is within a 45 minute commute with the added benefit of being closer to O'Hare.

What about taking the train from Mundelein area to ORD? Is this possible? Expensive? Time Saving?

One way fare is $5.25, time about 30-35 minutes. Check with Metra for schedule. If it fits your schedule it is generally competitive with driving for time and cost.

HUNTLEY
ALGONQUIN
FOX RIVER GROVE
VOLO
ISLAND LAKE
LAKE IN THE HILLS
All of these are fine cities, and you'll get a lot for your money. Crystal Lake, Cary and FRG are in very good school districts, it's where I've lived all my life. The least nice of those would be Island Lake and Wauconda, but they are not terrible. Crystal Lake is about a 30 min. drive to Mundelein and would be my recommendation.

Like many town Crystal Lake is served by several school districts, some of which are higher performing than other: http://iirc.niu.edu/SearchResult.aspx?type=CITY&searchText=$CRYSTAL%20 LAKE$

I would caution that the approximately 20 mile trip from Crystal Lake to Mundelein is mostly over very congested surface streets Crystal Lake, IL to Mundelein, IL - Google Maps and the 40+ mile trip to O'hare could be quite lengthy, I would add about 20% to the google travel time in normal conditions, much more in bad traffic O'Hare International Airpot, to Crystal Lake, IL - Google Maps
