Interesting read in Salon Magazine about Darien, Connecticut, "Snob zones: Fear, money and real estate -
A couple tried to build affordable housing in lily-white Darien, Conn. Then it got ugly"... according to the article, a wealthy town that has done anything possible to block affordable housing.

For several decades thereafter, Darien [CT] would come to be known as a community almost wholly reserved for white Protestants. Sociologist and author James W. Loewen has gone so far as to label it a “sundown town,” the term for towns that actively kept out African Americans and other groups in the interest of remaining “all white.”
For those of you who know, remember or have read more of the history of Chicago and Northwest Indiana, are there any Chicagoland or Northwest Indiana towns that have a similar history and could have been classified as "sundown towns?"

Pretty uncommon to find anything so blatant in nicer places in this region. The only thing that comes to mind is the sort of block busting that quickly saw lower economic strata towns like Maywood or Broadview switch from working class white to AA...

Whiting Indiana is a small blue collar town that's lost 55% of its population and is 40% hispanic, and around 50% white. I don't think it was every out of line with Hammond or the immediate area's demographics. White to hispanic, while Gary went white to black.

I know that North Barrington has relatively large minimum lot sizes. This does not necessarily mean black discrimination, but more like economic discrimination.

Not so much today, but I was thinking around pre 1980. I guess Merrilville could be added to the list as well since it was built solely to serve the white flight from Gary at the time. Now however, Merrilville's black population is pretty high compared to the 60's and 70's.

Wrong, Chet

Sundown Towns by James W. Loewen

Kenilworth, Chicago’s richest suburb was set up to be free of blacks and Jews from its founding. While it is not a sundown town today, it was in its beginnings. Several sundown suburbs of Chicago also barred Jews. Naperville also has a similar history. While some of these towns are not racist today, the history is there.

If some crazy old peope can be called "get off my lawn" types than surely others can be called "the man has been keeping people down" types. Neither is particularly accurate...
