Especially with kids and if both parents are working. Live within 30 minutes of work, if at all practical and possible. With a housing budget of $530K, staying within 30 minutes of Riverwoods in a nice suburb with good schools is certainly possible. Sure, they may not get the country acreage that one would get in Johnsburg or Spring Grove, but I would much rather compromise that then have to waste another 60-90 minutes per day in my car.
And this is not a criticism of those towns, It's down right Wisconsin-esque up there! It's just too far.

Especially with kids and if both parents are working. Live within 30 minutes of work, if at all practical and possible. With a housing budget of $530K, staying within 30 minutes of Riverwoods in a nice suburb with good schools is certainly possible. Sure, they may not get the country acreage that one would get in Johnsburg or Spring Grove, but I would much rather compromise that then have to waste another 60-90 minutes per day in my car.
