ChicagoMeO, gbs, and anyone else -

I'd like to live in Dunton Tower or Hancock Square in Arlington Heights. I prefer Hancock Square since they have W/D within their units. Sharing a two bedroom unit would be cheaper for me, however I don't know anyone in the area. I've posted ads on Craigslist and Facebook but no luck yet. Any other suggestions?

If you cannot afford a 1 bdrm then you should look at renting a studio. Living with someone you know is one thing but a complete stranger ... forget about it.

well, you might want to go over to one the apartment complexes that have more social activities feel, like where it has a pool, gym, etc, that way your neighbors will come out and meet at the pool, gym, etc. you might even meet some in the laundry room. Look for a place that has barbecues and activities for residents. A happening place might be over to the west - Schaumburg. but watch out for apartments that say they have some of the apartments as subsidized apartments, which you may not like that kind of atmosphere. when you wait for the person to interview you for an apartment, look at the residents coming and going and see if you think you'd be a good fit.

I used some apartment guides like Rent.com ,, Apartment Guide, Apartments.com for some ideas. then go to a realtor in the area who will show you apartments that i dont even know about. I never lived up northwest, though I have toured some including Hancock in Arlington Heights. Looked nice!

I've seen apartments being lower rent in Carol Stream, but that might be too far south for you, but i found it to be a nice town with rents being lower, but not subsidized housing.

Thanks chicagomeo. I'm in the burbs right now and checked out AH/RM. I wasn't that impressed. They are pretty dead...I'll check out Schaumburg today. I heard it may have some more things to do. Any other place suggestions? I've considered living in the city and doing the commute, but that would be an hour each way.

Schaumburg is totally dead, except for car-oriented stuff. Not much of a "town" there apart from the mall area. It has some larger night clubs with 40-year-old Armenian DJ's in tight t-shirts, though--if that is your idea of night life.

If you want more action in the burbs, look at Evanston. If you need more action than that, stick with the city. Singles in Chicagoland overwhelmingly choose the City of Chicago. And if you are judging based on a Monday night, well that's kind of silly. Go back on a weekend.

If you're dead set on the burbs, the best downtowns for "going out" are probably Naperville, Evanston, Arlington Heights, Geneva... None are particularly close to Rolling Meadows except for Arlington Heights, which is why this was the immediate recommendation. If that's not good enough, you will have to look elsewhere.

Did you spend a Friday or Saturday night in downtown Arlington Heights? Or drive around the residential neighborhoods on a Monday night?

I can't imagine someone hanging in downtown AH on the weekend and thinking it's "pretty dead." Even a 27-year old single. Especially if you read the disclaimers and adjusted your expectations downward from the urban nightlife you're accustomed to.

And of course RM is dead -- the downtown is a strip mall.

Default Mostly comes down to expectations...

I don't think anyone has ever suggested Arlingron Heights is some kind of rockin' pick-up spot.

The core of AH has maybe a dozen locally owned dining spots / places to grab a drink afterwork and not feel out of place. There are also nice locally owned spots to stop in for a coffee or breakfast before work. The opportunity to WALK to grocery stores and other shops is similalry hugely attractive compared to the sort of faceless drive everywhere sort of towns that otherwise dominate the NW suburbs.

In terms of true "nightlife" Naperville is almost certainly top of the suburban heap. Evanston is OK, though frankly for its size it does not really compare all that well. Even towns like Libertyville do pretty well on a "size adjusted" basis.

The fact is that if someone is accustomed to having the kinds of options of Lakeview or Wicker Park there is NO SUBURB that can hold a candle to that -- simply math will show the shear density of potential customers in those neighborhoods is right up there with someplace like Bourbon St in New Orleans or the Vegas Strip...

When folks on these boards recommend apartments in AH it is mostly becuase of the reasonable trade-off that come for those that what a tolerable commute from work in the NW suburbs -- if you want to head right to Arlington Park for a little opportunity to relax and watch a few races, grab a cocktail and some "bar food", maybe socialize with folks similarly inclined as opposed to braving the traffic into a "hip" neighborhood only to need to find a parking spot, change into less obviously office attire at 8PM or later and then wade through the crowds that may have been hanging out for hours the overall work/entertainment/commute equation is pretty decent...

There just isn't another town in the NW that can match this:

Downtown Arlington Heights Directory and Map
Discover Arlington Heights Guide

If for whatever reason you're attracted to the strange mix of nightclubs in Schaumburg, remember that you'll have to drive to those no matter what... and certainly you could do that from a place in AH, which is a much more livable, walkable town.
